Mornings at Georgian Bay have always held a special charm for us: the gentle rise of the sun, the calm of the water, and the quiet promise of a new day. Over the past year, we’ve added a new ritual to our mornings that has become both a delight and a meaningful part of our daily rhythm: Bulletproof Coffee.

At Seize the Bay, we often come back to four pillars that help shape life after 55: Joy, Energy, Meaning, and Adventure. This story lives most clearly in Energy, with touches of Joy as well. For us, this morning ritual has supported vitality, focus, and a more intentional start to the day.

Today, we’d like to share our experience with Bulletproof Coffee, what we enjoy about it, and how it has complemented our lifestyle, especially as part of our fasting routine and health journey.

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s a creamy, energizing blend that combines high-quality coffee with healthy fats. It’s made smooth by blending:

MCT Oil: Medium-chain triglycerides extracted from coconut oil.

Our Personal Blend: MCT Oil and Collagen

After experimenting, we settled on a version that suits our taste and health goals:

Coffee: Freshly brewed using our beloved coffee sock.  We blend a few beans to get it just right.

MCT Oil: We add a teaspoon and a half each for its energy-boosting properties.

Collagen Peptides: A scoop for added protein and joint support.  This adds protein and the benefits of collagen. 

By omitting the butter, we enjoy a lower-calorie drink without sacrificing the creamy texture and rich taste. This combination aligns perfectly with our weight loss plan and dietary preferences.

Part of Our 16:8 Fasting and Weight Loss Journey

Bulletproof Coffee has been instrumental in our 16:8 intermittent fasting routine, where we fast for 16 hours and eat during an 8-hour window.  Now, a purist will tell you that the bulletproof coffee is not true fasting, and that is likely true.  The body stays in Ketosis with an enhanced metabolic rate. All we can say is that in our case it has provided us with the benefits of weight loss, energy, and simple preparation that have made it a part of our day.

We love the taste of the coffee.  The frothy goodness brings a smile to our faces every day!  It is so much better than just black coffee, and doesn’t give us that “gut rot” feeling you sometimes get from drinking black coffee.  When we have shared it with others, they actually say “hey, this is actually good!”, expecting it to taste like medicine or something horrible.

How to Make Our Version of Bulletproof Coffee

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of freshly brewed coffee (using a coffee sock, if you like)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of MCT oil
  • 1 scoop of collagen peptides

Instructions:

Brew Your Coffee: We use freshly ground beans for the best flavour.

Combine Ingredients: Pour the hot coffee into a blender, add MCT oil and collagen.

Blend Carefully: Blend for 20-30 seconds until frothy and creamy.

Enjoy immediately: Pour into your favourite mug and savour each sip.

Tricks and Tips

  • Don’t add the MCT oil to the boiling water.  That can cause it to break down.
  • If you are new to MCT oil, you should start by adding 1-2 a teapoon to make sure your stomach doesn’t have any issues.  Over a few days continue to what works for you.  We have settled on 1 1/2 – 2 tablespoons.  This provides us with lots of energy till past noon.
  • Use a glass blender since we found the MCT Oil can get infused in the surface of the plastic blenders over time.
  • For a quick, easy-to-create coffee or when travelling, you can use a standard coffee machine and “froth it” by stirring it vigorously with a spoon.  It does not work as good as a blender, but in a pinch it can do the trick.  I have also used this a few times while running out the door in the morning.

Incorporating Bulletproof Coffee into our mornings has been more than just a dietary change. It has become a small but meaningful part of how we begin the day: with more intention, more steadiness, and more appreciation for simple rituals that support wellbeing.
