Adventure
Adventure is about staying open to new experiences, new places, and new possibilities. It is the refusal to let our world shrink just because we are getting older.
At Seize the Bay, we believe adventure is a state of mind. Sometimes it means crossing an ocean; other times, it means crossing the street to try a local shop you’ve never visited. Whether it is a “late-life first” or a return to a favorite trail, adventure keeps us curious, courageous, and deeply alive.
Escaping the Snow, Embracing the World
For Barb and me, adventure has taken on a new rhythm in this stage of life. While we are deeply rooted in the spirit of the Bay, we have reached a stage where we choose to escape the snow when the Ontario winter grows long.
Seeking out warmer climates and exploring new corners of the globe has become a vital part of our Adventure pillar. It isn’t just about avoiding the ice; it’s about staying expansive. We’ve found that by stepping away to explore international shores, we actually return to Georgian Bay with a renewed sense of wonder. We love our home in North Simcoe, but we appreciate its rugged beauty even more after we have seen how others live, breathe, and thrive in different parts of the world.
What Adventure Means Here
Adventure is the bridge between who we are and who we are still becoming. On this site, we look at adventure through three distinct lenses:
Global Exploration: Traveling to new countries and warmer winter destinations to keep our perspectives fresh and our spirits open.
Local Discovery: Finding the “hidden” Georgian Bay—the trails, inlets, and local gems in North Simcoe that we often overlook in our daily routines.
Personal Growth: The “Inner Adventure” of trying something unfamiliar, learning a new skill, or saying “yes” to an experience that pushes our boundaries.
What You’ll Find in Adventure
The stories and reflections you’ll find in this section are designed to inspire your next move, whether it’s a flight across the Atlantic or a day trip to Big Chute. We explore:
Winter Escapes: Practical reflections on living the “Snowbird” lifestyle and finding warmth in places like the Algarve or Tamarindo.
Away from the Bay: Dispatches from our international travels and what they teach us about aging and community.
The Georgian Bay Frontier: Guides to local hiking, boating, and nature outings that remind us why we love calling this region home.
Late-Life Firsts: Encouragement for trying new hobbies, languages, or activities after 55.
Why Adventure Matters After 55
It is easy for life to become smaller without us noticing. We fall into comfortable routines, return to familiar places, and slowly begin to postpone the experiences we still want to have.
Adventure interrupts that pattern. It reminds us that our “best chapters” aren’t behind us—they are happening right now. For us, the greatest gift of adventure is the perspective it provides. Exploring the world makes the world feel bigger, but it also makes our home on the Bay feel more precious. We travel to learn, but we return to the Bay to live with more intention and gratitude.
How to Invite More Adventure
You don’t need to be a world traveler to live adventurously. Adventure grows whenever you leave room for possibility:
Change your view: Visit a new park or conservation area in Simcoe County you’ve never seen.
Follow your curiosity: Plan that trip you’ve been talking about for years—even if it’s just a weekend away.
Embrace the “New”: Try one thing this month that makes you a “beginner” again.
Look closer: Explore Georgian Bay with the eyes of a tourist, noticing the details you usually drive past.
Explore Adventure
If you are ready for more discovery, more openness, or a fresh sense of possibility, start here. Let these stories remind you that this chapter of life can be as expansive as the Georgian Bay horizon.
