Surfing the Future: How We Adapt to the Digital Age

By Ron Neumann & Barb Coxworth

Hello friends,

In today’s fast-paced world, technology seems to evolve at lightning speed. From smartphones to artificial intelligence, new gadgets and systems emerge almost daily, reshaping how we live, work, and connect with one another. For those of us who didn’t grow up with a device in hand, it can feel a bit overwhelming.

In our household, Ron is the tech enthusiast, always eager to try out the latest innovations. Barb, on the other hand, approaches technology with a bit more caution, preferring to take things one step at a time. We recognize that while the world isn’t always focused on our age group, it’s essential for us to develop the skills to thrive in this ever-changing landscape.

Why It’s Important Not to Be Left Behind

Staying engaged with technology isn’t just about keeping up appearances; it’s about maintaining our independence, staying connected with loved ones, and accessing a wealth of information and opportunities that enhance our lives.

Communication: From video calls with grandchildren to participating in online communities, technology bridges distances and keeps relationships strong.

Health and Wellness: Telemedicine, fitness apps, and online resources empower us to take charge of our health.

Lifelong Learning: The internet is a gateway to endless knowledge, allowing us to explore new interests and hobbies.

Convenience: Online shopping, banking, and services simplify daily tasks, giving us more time to enjoy life’s pleasures.

Balancing Technology with What Matters Most

While embracing technology, it’s crucial to maintain the human connections and community ties that enrich our lives. Here’s how we strive to balance the two:

Set Boundaries: We allocate specific times for using devices, ensuring we remain present during family meals and social gatherings.

Engage Together: Exploring new technologies as a couple makes the experience enjoyable and less intimidating.

Stay Grounded: We prioritize face-to-face interactions and outdoor activities, like hiking and boating, to nourish our relationships and well-being.

Embracing AI and Building a Second Brain

Two areas we’ve found particularly exciting are Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the concept of Building a Second Brain. Let’s dive into how these can help us stay ahead and enrich our lives.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s becoming an integral part of everyday life. Here’s how we can harness its benefits:

Voice Assistants: Devices like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant can set reminders, play music, answer questions, and even control home appliances with simple voice commands.

Personalized Recommendations: AI helps curate news feeds, suggest books, or recommend health tips tailored to our interests.

Language Translation: Communicate with people worldwide or understand foreign content with real-time translation apps.

Ron’s Tip: “Don’t be afraid to experiment with AI tools. Start small—try using a voice assistant to set a daily reminder or ask about the weather.”

Building a Second Brain

The idea of Building a Second Brain, popularized by productivity expert Tiago Forte, revolves around creating a personal system to organize information, thoughts, and ideas digitally. It’s about offloading mental clutter so you can focus on what matters most.

This is a practical way to support the natural decline in brain function as people age.  Ron has found this an invaluable way to enhance his ability to complete his commitments.  He thinks that he is actually more organized and has more knowledge now than he did at the peak of his working time, based on some of these tools.

This doesn’t have to be a complex thing, and can be entered into your life in a very simple way.  If you have an iPhone, you can just start by typing things into Apple Notes.  With the new searching tools built in, the structure of the organization is not really that important.

Here are a few stages and steps as part of the formal process.

Capture Information: Use note-taking apps like your iPhone Notes, Evernote or OneNote to jot down ideas, save articles, or record important information.

Organize Thoughtfully: Create folders or tags to categorize content, making it easy to retrieve when needed.

Reflect and Act: Regularly review your notes to spark creativity, plan projects, or make informed decisions.

Barb’s Perspective: “At first, the concept seemed complex, but I realized it’s like having a digital journal or scrapbook. It helps me keep track of recipes, travel plans, and even gardening tips—all in one place!”

Ron’s Sugggestion: “Start with your iPhone Notes and then grow to a free system like Notion over time”.

Steps to Navigate Changing Technology

Start with Curiosity: Approach new technologies with an open mind. Ask questions, explore, and allow yourself to be a beginner.

Leverage Resources: There are plenty of tutorials, workshops, and community classes geared toward seniors learning technology.

Practice Patience: It’s okay to take your time. Celebrate small victories and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.

Stay Connected: Join online forums or local groups where you can learn alongside others and share experiences.

Integrate with Interests: Use technology to enhance hobbies—photography apps for capturing sunsets, fitness trackers for your walks, or online groups for your favorite crafts.

Maintaining Relationships and Community

While technology offers incredible tools, the essence of our happiness lies in our relationships and community involvement.

Use Technology to Enhance Connections: Schedule regular video chats with family, participate in virtual book clubs, or collaborate on projects with friends online.

Volunteer Virtually: Many organizations offer opportunities to contribute remotely, allowing you to give back from the comfort of your home.

Balance Screen Time with Real Time: Make conscious efforts to unplug and engage in in-person activities—walks in nature, coffee with friends, or community events.

Our Journey Together

Navigating the technological landscape has been a shared adventure for us. Ron’s enthusiasm often propels us into new territories, while Barb’s thoughtful approach ensures we stay grounded and focused on what truly enriches our lives.

We’ve found that embracing technology doesn’t mean abandoning our values or the ways we cherish spending our time. Instead, it’s about enhancing our capabilities, staying connected, and continuing to grow.

Final Thoughts

The world may be rapidly evolving, but we have the power to adapt and thrive. By embracing new technologies thoughtfully, we can enrich our lives, maintain our independence, and stay connected with the world around us.

Remember, it’s never too late to learn something new. Together, let’s seize the opportunities technology offers while holding tight to the relationships and values that make life meaningful.
